With the Memorial Day weekend just concluded and summer here, I thought it was time to update the blog! We had such a busy weekend and a good one, too.
But before that, Mother's Day weekend was also great! Ed and the kids got me a gift certificate for a massage at Spa Sydell and a $25 gift card to Ippolito's. We went to Ron and Linda's on Sunday to celebrate with the family. David and Melodi's daughter, Avery, was born on Saturday night and Brendan's surgery in Baltimore was a big success so there was lots to celebrate and be thankful for.
The following weekend, I had my last Disciple class (yeah! I finished!) and Elizabeth had her season-ending soccer festival. That was kind of a disaster because Daniel had
a meltdown (we were there during his naptime, after all) and Elizabeth didn't really give 100% during the soccer scrimmage (does staring at the ball and watching other kids kick it count??) so we didn't exactly have a wonderful time but at least Elizabeth still professes a love for soccer so we'll see how it goes in the future. Elizabeth also concluded the choir season at church with a concert on May 14th in the sanctuary. Again, I don't think Elizabeth is going to be a future American Idol winner or anything, but she seems to have fun so at this age, I guess that's all that matters. We did manage to bring along the video camera this time with battery included so we'll have the memories saved for a long time to come!
The end of the school year has come and gone and everything seemed to go smoothly. Life was definitely crazy busy for a couple of weeks but all's well that end's well. I was definitely sad to see the school year come to an end but I've surprised myself today with an optimistic attitude about the summer and things to come. It only seems fair to give the kids and the teachers a break and I always have fond memories of my summers growing up and I want my kids to have the same fond memories too. Ed and I made the plunge and bought a new digital SLR camera, the Nikon D40 and we are learning how to use it so hopefully we can do a better job of capturing those memories! We also took some time out for ourselves and got a babysitter last Saturday so we could see "What Happens in Vegas" and dine out at Goldfish, followed by coffee and dessert at Cheesecake Factory. We had a fun evening and it was good to get out by ourselves for one night.
The kids both received some great scrapbooks from their teachers so I know we will cherish those as remembrances of their school year. It was strange to look back at pictures of Daniel when he started the school year back in September. He's changed so much! He was still really a baby back then and now he's definitely all toddler and inching closer to "big boy" status. Elizabeth has grown and matured some, too, and Ms. Pam was telling me that she's a lot less shy than she was at the beginning of the school year. I'm so proud of both of them and I can't wait to watch them grow and change over the next school year and beyond. Kristi and I helped with the last day of school party in the Zebra class last Friday with an edible sun craft (it's amazing what you can do with yellow jello jigglers, pretzel sticks for rays, raisins for eyes, and mandarin oranges for smiles!) Then we had a pizza party at Benjamin's house where the kids feasted on macaroni and cheese pizza. A good time was had by all!!
Then we had a terrific family weekend at home for the long Memorial Day holiday. We were supposed to have our small group over on Friday for a cookout but a quite nasty storm came out of nowhere around 4:00 so we cancelled. Bonnie had come to clean the house that day and I was not prepared for 8 adults and 9 kids in my house!! So the four of us had burgers and dogs at home. The weather cleared out and was nice again around 6:00 so we headed to Bruster's for ice cream. It turned out to be a fun Friday night. Then on Saturday, I met Tracey at The Forum and redeemed my Spa Sydell gift certificate for a much-needed one-hour massage. Then we shopped a little bit and tried to have lunch at Ippolito's but apparently they're not open for lunch on Saturdays. So we went to a little Italian place at The Forum instead. Meanwhile, Ed took the kids to the Decatur Arts Festival and they had lunch at Ted's. Then we relaxed in the afternoon and my parents came over for dinner on the eve of their trip to Hawaii.
On Sunday, we braved (ha!) a family trip to the Braves game for the first time in 2 years. We had the "good" seats from one of Ed's former customers at Exxon. Boy was it HOT!! The seats are just a few rows behind the Braves dugout but directly in the sun. Of course, the Braves lost to Arizona (I believe my record at Braves games is now 0-7 dating back to last year!!) but the kids behaved really well and my hopes are up that they can do well when we go to the Red Sox game in Boston next month. And I also got a little sunburned on my legs despite applying sunscreen but other than that, it was a fun outing. We came home and had dinner at Sangria's before hitting Publix. On Monday, we headed to the pool in the morning and packed a picnic for lunch. Elizabeth did really well in the pool. She still can't tread water or hold her own yet but she was comfortable to jet all over the pool with nothing but a foam noodle for support. She even jumped off the diving board at her own request. Daniel simply LOVES to jump off the side and his swim vest from last year still fits so that's helpful. I gained confidence that it might be OK to take the kids to the pool myself this summer so I might try it later in the week. We came home to relax a bit and then we had the Dormineys and Smiths over for a cookout around 5:00. The kids played pretty well together and the adults had a good time too. I really enjoy having people over with our new patio and revamped yard. It's just such a beautiful setting for enjoying with friends.
I was really disappointed that the weekend had to come to an end and Ed had to go back to work! But hopefully it's just a sign of things to come for the summer. Thankfully, Ed seems to be over the terrible migraine he had on Wednesday. Hopefully things at work will mellow for him and/or he can intensify his search for something new. I really want him to be happy at work and I really believe he will find something great.
We spent the first "official" day of summer today just sleeping in for a slow start and running a few errands. We have plans with Lorie tomorrow and then we'll see what happens the rest of the week. I think we'll enjoy spending time together this summer and who knows - maybe we'll be sad when it's time to go back to school in a few short months!!
