May 9, 2008 - In the Throes of Spring!

Once again, I've allowed too much time to pass since my last entry! But things are going well in the Hong household. The weather has been very nice lately (except for the SEVEN straight weekends of rain) so we have been spending lots of time outside. Just the other day, I went to Toys R Us to buy a tee for the kids to hit from and a soccer goal but as of yet, I haven't had the time to get them out of the car. But we hosted several couples and their kids last Friday (Merrills, Steeds, Hinds, McMillens) and it was wonderful to have all the kids playing in the yard and all the adults relaxing on the patio. It was our first official cookout with friends on the new patio and I was so excited. It's exactly what Ed and I envisioned when we decided to add the patio and fence to the yard. So I'm happy to invest in a few more yard toys to keep the kids occupied so the adults can socialize!

Since my last entry, I went to the Bon Jovi concert on Thursday, May 1st at Philips Arena with Lisa Bowling and Amy Merrill for a fun girls' night. We had a blast and it was really fun to "re-live our youth" a little bit and dance in the aisles while listening to some great music from past and present. And having Jon Bon Jovi to look at from our seats wasn't so terrible either. Daughtry opened for Bon Jovi and he did really well too. They both did a duet for "Blaze of Glory" that was just incredible. This was the third time I've seen Bon Jovi at Philips Arena in the last 8 years and it definitely did not disappoint! I'm sure I'll be one of the first to buy tickets the next time they come to town too!

Ed and I also redeemed his anniversary gift to me when we went to the Keith Urban/Carrie Underwood concert at Gwinnett Arena on Friday, April 25th. We actually made a double date out of it with Brian and Kristi Steed. They ended up getting tickets from someone at Brian's work. We met at California Dreaming for dinner and then went to the concert, although we didn't sit together. Ed and I had really good seats and we had a great time. I was already a Carrie Underwood fan but now I'm a Keith Urban fan too! And just like Jon Bon Jovi, he's not so bad to look at, either. :-) He played an incredible show and went on forever. We didn't get home until midnight and we left during the third song of his encore!! I ordered his greatest hits CD and it's really good. It turned out to be a great date night. And then to complete my cultural experience for the weekend, mom and I went to see the Broadway version of "The Lion King" at the Atlanta Civic Center on Sunday afternoon. It was wonderful and I somewhat regretted not getting a ticket for Elizabeth. There were lots of kids there but it lasted a full three hours so it may have been a little long for her anyway. The music and costumes were incredible and although I wasn't impressed with the Civic Center, it was a terrific show.

I've been tapped (i.e. begged, pleaded, coerced) into being the co-coordinator of the Communications Committee for the preschool next year. I will also be a "member at large" of the executive committee for the Parent Council. I am looking forward to being more involved and being a part of the executive committee but I'm a little nervous about being in charge of the newsletter. I am confident, though, that I will get a lot of help from the former coordinators and other volunteers. I figure it will also be good practice for being a super-involved parent in the PTA once the kids get to elementary school. I've been thinking a lot again about the kids' futures in school (public vs private, etc.) and getting mildly stressed about it since this is the time of year that others are making decisions but I really need to have faith and just put it aside for now. Everything will work itself out and there's plenty of time.

Ed still hasn't heard anything about the Dunkin' Donuts job. We know they conducted a background check on him since they called to verify his date of birth, but the last word from the HR guy was that he hoped to get back to Ed by the end of this week. Since it's now Friday at 3:00, I'm doubtful that he will hear anything today. I am thinking that they must be putting together an offer package or at least proceeding with another step since things are taking so long (approvals?) but we'll see. In the meantime, he's been contacted by a couple of headhunters about other jobs and he has one interview next Tuesday. The job entails financing and the majority of clients are petroleum companies so although they know he does not have a background in finance, he thinks they are attracted to his contacts in the industry and his marketing background. So we'll see what happens! I told him it never hurts to be wanted....

The kids are doing well, just the occasional small things that tend to drive me crazy....like Daniel bolting to the back of the van and refusing to get in his car seat or Elizabeth intentionally grabbing a car or toy that Daniel wants just to annoy him. I can't believe there's only two weeks left of school. I'm already getting nervous at the prospect of summer and having to entertain the kids 24/7 but I've survived two summers so far and I'm sure we'll survive this one too. I'm confident that between playdates, summer camp, vacations, semi-retired MiMi, trips to the pool, etc., that we can make it a fun summer. Plus, I really feel like both kids have had a great year and I'll miss their teachers and classmates. I think Elizabeth has had a really good year with Ms. Michele and Ms. Pam and I hope she can carry that into next year for Pre-K.

Speaking of the pool, Elizabeth seems to be doing well with her swimming lessons. She and Ella have been grouped together and there's a male instructor who seems to be particularly good with them. He told us this week that they are both doing well and are getting more comfortable in the water. I'm not sure that she'll be totally self-sufficient in the pool this summer but as long as she's getting more comfortable, I guess that's what matters.
