Happy Valentine's Day indeed. Poor Elizabeth is sick. This is the first time she's missed school for a sick day in two years - basically her entire career at the Young Children's School. She was fine last night. We went to Midweek dinner at church, she went to choir, and then we attended a great performance of the American Boychoir while the kids stayed in the nursery. Ed left around 7:30 to pick them up and take them home for bed. All seemed well until this morning. I should have known something was not right because Elizabeth came into our room around 6:45 and climbed into our bed as usual, but I got up at 7:00 to shower and get ready and she didn't ask for the TV to be on.....not once. That's a big red flag. I figured maybe she was just tired and fell asleep in our bed so I proceeded to drag her out of bed to go downstairs for breakfast. She promptly ran past the kitchen and crumpled herself onto the love seat in the family room. I made oatmeal for all of us (apples & cinnamon for the kids, raisins & spice for me) and called her to the table. She wouldn't budge. That's when I really knew something had to be wrong. She told me she didn't feel good and that she didn't want to go to school. I asked her if she was sure because she would miss her class Valentine's Day party if she didn't go and she said, "It's OK....we can do it tomorrow." :-(
So my poor baby is sick and she had to miss her class party, which she has been looking forward to for days. I decided to take Daniel to school anyway since he seemed fine and I wanted to get him out of the house to minimize exposure to any of Elizabeth's "germs." He's got a birthday in 4 days and a party in 3 days and I don't want him to miss any of it!! I managed to get Elizabeth dressed and get her to brush her teeth.....at which time she threw up in the sink. There wasn't anything in her stomach really so it wasn't too bad but then I began to feel bad. I got them in the car (oh, and it was 26 degrees this morning so a real FUN day to be outside) and drove to school. Luckily Kristi pulled in right after I did so I asked her if she would sit in the car with Elizabeth after taking her kids inside so that I could take Daniel. Of course she agreed so I was able to get Daniel to his classroom without getting Elizabeth out of the car and I was also able to drop off her Valentines, which she hand-signed with her initials on Saturday, and tell her teachers why she wouldn't be there. Elizabeth was looking very pale and sad in her carseat and my heart was just breaking for her. She never likes to miss school, especially on the day of her Valentine's party, and I was planning to go too!
But it's hard to feel too sorry for ourselves because as a whole, the four of us are blessed with very good health. After throwing up several more times when we got home (and no sign of any fever), I concluded that she must have a stomach virus. Her teachers didn't indicate anything going around the class so I guess she might have picked it up from one of the kids in choir or in the church nursery last night. She hasn't seemed too pitiful yet today and has even perked up a few times. The color has mostly returned to her face which is encouraging. Just a little while ago, she told me she was hungry and that she wanted pizza for dinner! So I am very hopeful that this is just one of those 24-hour bugs and hopefully she will be good as new tomorrow. Bonnie is here today to clean the house in advance of our birthday weekend so I was thankful for being able to leave Elizabeth at home while I picked Daniel up from school. I also ran to Walgreen's to pick up some Pedialyte for Elizabeth which of course she wants nothing to do with. Each time she gets a stomach bug I get some Pedialyte because I'm always worried about dehydration and each time she refuses it. Maybe one day I'll learn!!
Ed was sweet enough to send me a bouquet of flowers today - 5 red roses and some beautiful carnations in a big red vase. I called to thank him and he told me that Elizabeth was supposed to get some flowers too. They haven't arrived yet and must be coming from a different florist so I hope they get here soon. I think they would really cheer her up. We also have musical cards (Disney Princess for Elizabeth and Lightning McQueen for Daniel, of course) to give to the kids and "small" gifts - a Princess chair for Elizabeth (on clearance for $20 at Wal-Mart!) and a Lightning McQueen book for Daniel. I am waiting for Ed to get home so we can present the kids their gifts. I feel a little bad that I didn't get anything for Ed, but we are going to our new favorite restaurant, Wildfire, on Saturday night while his mom babysits. Plus I'm pretty sure he's not into flowers and candy seems inappropriate since he's on Weight Watchers so I'm not really sure where that leaves me among the "traditional" Valentine's gifts. I much prefer to celebrate our anniversary next month rather than Valentine's Day anyway. I hope he knows how much I love him - every day! I enjoy exchanging cards and I really like the one I got for him.
I hope to add an update soon - with news of Elizabeth's fast recovery from illness and the arrival of her flowers! I hate that she has to miss gymnastics today too but that will make us even more eager to go next week when we can hopefully sign up for the next session.
