February 18, 2008 - Happy 2nd Birthday, Daniel!!

Happy 2nd Birthday, my sweet boy! I can't believe my baby is really 2!!! What a birthday weekend we had. First of all, to finish off my last entry, Elizabeth never received her flowers on Valentine's Day and suffice it to say, the Hong family will NOT be using any of the internet flower services again. This incident combined with Thanksgiving when we ordered flowers for Marv and Mimi that never arrived, have made us big fans of local florists. Needless to say, Ed is disputing the charge with the credit card and wrote a nice long letter to FTD.com (in response they offered a $10 credit.....whoopee....). Anyway, the good news is that Elizabeth was as good as new by Thursday evening and her stomach bug was gone. So despite missing school and gymnastics, she was in good spirits and both kids really enjoyed their cards and gifts.

So back to my birthday boy! We had a great birthday weekend. Ed's mom flew in on Saturday so we went to an Asian market in Duluth and she found everything she needed to make us a terrific Korean feast on Sunday. Boy, was that place packed!! On Saturday evening, Ed and I were able to escape to Wildfire for dinner while NaNa babysat. Our friends Ron and Kristy joined us and we had a great time. Ed showed tremendous willpower in ordering a tuna entree with broccoli (nothing on it) and no dessert. I, on the other hand, enjoyed the filet medallion special with blue cheese, mushroom, and horseradish toppings and I ordered dessert too, the apple crisp with ice cream. They told us this time that they offer half portions for dessert so at least we didn't do too much damage. It was nice to have a night away and I think Ed's mom enjoyed being with the kids.

Sunday was all-day preparations for Daniel's party. NaNa was in the kitchen for virtually the entire day, preparing meat, rice, vegetables, noodles, everything possible for a wonderful Korean meal. Ed and I added green beans and spinach salad to the mix. I went to Party City and got a few "Cars" balloons including a huge Lightning McQueen balloon to tie to Daniel's chair. Ed picked up the cake from Publix and it was incredible! I also got some decorations: banner, tablecloth, centerpiece, plates, napkins, to complete the "Cars" theme. My parents arrived around 4:00 and Daniel woke up from his nap and was amazed by all the balloons! Zachary and Heather also came, along with Granny (in her poor arm cast!) and Pa. Everyone really enjoyed the food. Ed even made his cheese dip with all low-fat ingredients.

We opened presents shortly after dinner and Daniel seemed enthralled with everything, with the primary exception of clothes which he wanted nothing to do with. He got lots of cars, of course, and a Sesame Street driver's toy. We also gave him a Mr. Potato Head but I don't think that excites him nearly as much as the Lightning McQueen toys. After the gifts, we lit the candles on his cake and sang to him and he really tried to blow out the candles on his own! He almost got them out but he needed a little help from MiMi to get both of them. He genuinely seemed to enjoy himself the entire evening and I think he really liked being the center of attention! I can't wait until next year when he will fully "get" the whole birthday thing but it really couldn't have gone any better. The only downer was a storm that came through right as everyone was arriving but it passed through quickly and wasn't too bad. The weather has been so nice lately that we were hoping to use the new patio but there will be plenty of time for that and we don't have any furniture yet anyway!

So today being Daniel's actual birthday, we're not doing a whole lot to celebrate since we had his party yesterday. The kids were off school again today and so is my mom so we met at Discover Mills to do a little shopping. I wanted to get a small jump on spring clothes for the kids. I got two pairs of shoes for Daniel (he's now a 7 1/2 Extra Wide!) and one pair of sandals for Elizabeth. I also hit the Carter's outlet and got a few spring pajamas for the kids and one outfit for Elizabeth. I got a couple of coupons to go back next month but I just wanted to get a few things today since spring fever tends to hit early here in Atlanta. We had lunch with MiMi at McAlister's Deli and then came home for naptime. Ed will be home this evening and I imagine we'll have leftovers for dinner and then Ed is off to Las Vegas in the morning for the next few days. We are meeting Lorie and her sons Jack and Colin at Chuck E Cheese tomorrow for dinner so we can loosely count that as Daniel's "official" birthday dinner. I am also going to make banana mini muffins for his class tomorrow.

In other news, Ed weighed in today and was ecstatic to learn he lost 3 pounds for the week! He was so worried he wouldn't lose anything after our weekend of feasting. But he was really good about doing the elliptical to make up for the food so I know that helped. He's now down 19 pounds total and he only has about 4 pounds to go to reach his initial goal. I am so proud of him! We might be getting close to needing new clothes for him already! His mom could really tell a difference and she was so excited for him. I, on the other hand, haven't exercised since last Wednesday because we've been sleeping in with no school so I need to get back on track tomorrow morning! I think those 5 pounds that I lost have mostly found their way back to me in the last several days....

That's all for today. I can't believe my baby boy is 2 and I hope the next year brings as much joy and excitement as the last two!! More to come after his check-up on Wednesday morning with Dr. Yoder!
